Nearer, my God, to Thee

Today, I made time for my Heavenly Father in a new way🤍🌿

I practiced yoga then immediately took time to quietly ponder and pray🧘‍♀️🌿🙏🏻

My mind was open and clear. I became still and INVITED my Heavenly Father in. I became nearer to Him.

Penned by Sarah F. Adams (1805-1848), the hymn “Nearer, My God, to Thee” has been a comfort to me at different times of my life. I have been strengthened and have grown closer to Heavenly Father listening to the song on repeat.

I was less familiar with verses four and five and with a closer study, I was impressed with their message of joyfully returning to live with God.

4. Then with my waking thoughts

Bright with thy praise,

Out of my stony griefs

Bethel I’ll raise;

So by my woes to be

Nearer, my God, to thee,

Nearer, my God, to thee,

Nearer to thee!

5. Or if, on joyful wing

Cleaving the sky,

Sun, moon, and stars forgot,

Upward I fly,

Still all my song shall be

Nearer, my God, to thee,

Nearer, my God, to thee,

Nearer to thee!

I want to build a close relationship with God so that when I see Him again, I am overcome with joy. So that it’s a reunion with a dear friend. I want to be so excited that I can’t stand it😁

I have a hard time sitting still and being quiet. I love to plan and am often itching to then execute the plan. When I finish a task, I’m ready to move on to the next project. And if I’m not talking to someone, I’m listening to music.

So spending part of a Saturday morning practicing yoga is not a regular occurrence for me. I’m working to become flexible, and yoga challenges me in that way. It also helps me breathe.

My mind is often a storm itself (think of multiple browser windows open full of tabs). The intentional actions of going into another room, slowing down, listening to my body, and giving myself space to think brought me peace🤍🌿

I’m amazed how these simple actions quieted my brain, my need to rush, and my anxiety.

How can you invite Heavenly Father (God) into your life today? Or, what plan can you make to invite Him tomorrow?
